Last week, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld (seen here thinking with his neck) made an important connection — one to which many of us would do well to understand.

In a friendly chat with attendees at the American Legion’s annual convention, Rumsfeld pointed out that some of us — some us who are interested in “human rights” and other such bunk — are a little bit confused. The New York Times quoted the secretary as saying that there was some “moral or intellectual confusion about who or what is right or wrong,” although it was careful to point out that Rumsfeld never mentioned “The Democrats” by name. Why didn’t he? Who knows.

Anyway, while you were out marching for the rights of innocents detained at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, our government was making sure that Iraqis had a chance to enjoy the same freedoms you take for granted.

I think what Rumsfeld was trying to say was that, basically, if you oppose this administration in its policies to rid the world of fundamentalist extremists is doing the same sort of thing Hitler would have done. That’s right. Hitler. You’re either with us or against us, my man.

Rove must be down to his last trick.
